A writer for The Sarah Jane Adventures has confirmed that the series will not continue without lead actress Elisabeth Sladen.

The actress passed away before filming could be completed on the show’s fifth series, but recent reports suggested that scripts were being rewritten to explain her absence.

However, writing on his Twitter account, series writer Gareth Roberts denied the rumours, insisting “The story… re SJA is not true (sic).”

Roberts has worked on 15 episodes of the CBBC drama and has also written for parent series Doctor Who.

Prior to her death, Sladen filmed three two-part stories for the show’s fifth run, including one serial written by Roberts. It is currently unclear when or if these episodes will air.

The BBC has reportedly decided to continue broadcasting The Sarah Jane Adventures, following the death of Elisabeth Sladen.

The much-loved actress passed away last month following a battle against cancer. According to The Sun, her Doctor Who spin-off will continue on CBBC with writers finding a way to explain her absence.

It had been suggested that bosses were unsure about broadcasting the fifth series of the show, of which Sladen had not completed filming before her death.

However, the paper claims that it was decided to continue the series, with the remaining scripts being rewritten.

“Writers will find a way to complete the series without Sarah,” a source said. “Fans will be thrilled to know it is returning.”

Paying tribute to Sladen, Sarah Jane Adventures creator and former Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies previously said: “I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful. The universe was lucky to have Sarah Jane Smith; the world was lucky to have Lis.”

I am so gutted about this! Is this the end of the SJA’s?

The producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures has claimed that the show will avoid another crossover with Doctor Who in the near future.

Matt Smith will appear as the Doctor in the forthcoming two-part adventure ‘Death of the Doctor’.

Phil Ford told Last Broadcast: “We have to remember that this is The Sarah Jane Adventures and Doctor Who is another show. Crossing the boundary is fun every now and again, but I’m not sure we should do it all the time.”

He added that another crossover between the two programmes could begin to “look like a stunt”.

“This was a great opportunity for Sarah Jane to meet the new Doctor,” he said. “But I’d be wary of him coming back too much. Schedule-wise for the two shows it can be a logistical nightmare too.”

However, Ford insisted that he is not entirely ruling out a future appearance from the Doctor.

“I’m sure he’ll be back again some time,” he said.

The first part of ‘Death of the Doctor’ will air on October 25 on the CBBC channel.

Matt Smith has revealed that he was “very excited” to be able to appear in an episode of The Sarah Jane Adventures.

Smith will play the Doctor alongside Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane) and Katy Manning (Jo Grant) in the Doctor Who spinoff.

He told SFX: “I did feel I was in the presence of Doctor Who royalty! Both [Elizabeth and Katy] go back a long way and occasionally I’d be reminded of the show’s long and glorious past.”

He added: “You never lose sight of the fact that you’re part of a programme which has been around for a very long time and will doubtless go on for a very long time in the future, long after I’ve stopped playing the Doctor.”

The actor also revealed details of his role in ‘Death of the Doctor’.

“There are rumours of the Doctor’s demise, which obviously cause Sarah Jane a great deal of concern and an understandable need to try to help by rushing to his side,” he explained. “It’s drama on a grand scale, with some tense scenes inside a secret base beneath Mount Snowdon.”

The Sarah Jane Adventures will return to BBC One next month.
